Dual-Polarization
Weather Radars are fast becoming an important new tool in
Doppler Weather Radar technology. When the dual polarization
upgrade of the CINRAD/SA radar is completed, it will greatly
improve the severe weather monitoring and warning ability of
the meteorological service.
The WSR-98D/DP/S
dual-polarization radar has many important features:
1. Introduces in
practice the results of many years of research into
Dual-Polarization conducted on the American WSR-88D radar.
2. Incorporates
the technical approach of simultaneous transmission and
reception of horizontal and vertical polarization.
3. By extending
the CINRAD/SA on line automatic built in calibration
features to the dual polarization implementation, the system
can ensure the accuracy of all Dual-Polarization
measurements.
4. Uses the same
component structure as the American WSR-88D Dual
Polarization implementation.
5. Implements the
same Volume Coverage Pattern (VCP) developed for the WSR-88D
with Dual-Polarization.
