Beijing Metstar Radar Co., Ltd. (Metstar) is a high-technology company formed in 1996 as a joint venture between the Lockheed Martin Corporation of the United States and China National Huayun Technology Development Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of the China Meteorological Administration.
Metstar's charter is to combine the latest technological advancements in both meteorology and electronics to provide high-class and reliable weather radars and services to the domestic and oversea customers and to branch out into related fields.
Metstar's S, C and X band Doppler CINRAD (WSR-88D) radars are upgraded versions of the NEXRAD (WSR-88D), which was designed and produced by Lockheed Martin. Metstar's WSR-98D's design is based extensively on the WSR-88D design and shares many features including state-of-the-art computerized control, 24-hour operational capability, real-time monitoring, real-time calibration, and high accuracy and reliability. The data and information produced by Metstar's CINRAD radars are formatted such that the system output information can be shared and transmitted through standard Internet links. Metstar has a high production capability with an annual capacity exceeding 20 systems per year.
